One of the premier producers of Cahors, the Rigal family have been producing wines South West France since the 1750’s and have extended their operation to include vineyards throughout the Lot Valley. Because of the diversity of plantings that Rigal have, this wine is a Cotes du Lot rather than a Cahors, this is one of the newer classifications in the Indication Geographique Protegee. The area around the lot valley has many alluvial terraces that are free-draining and have great sun exposure, and are perfect for growing Malbec, indeed the area around Cahors is thought to be the birthplace of this wonderful grape. This is classic Southern French Malbec, hence the name “The Original Malbec” as it is true to the grape variety with firm structure, aromas of black cherry, bramble fruit on the nose. This is followed on the palate by more bramble fruit, along with hints of anise and prune and some peppery spice. It is well balanced and smooth, with a touch of vanilla. The finish is clean and lasting.
