Product Details
Tannat is a red grape originally from the Basque country, and as the name suggests, Tannat grapes generate tannins like there’s no tomorrow. It is probably best known as the principal grape in Madiran from Southwestern France, but now most associated with the small South American country of Uruguay. Tannat has the same standing in Uruguay as Shiraz in Australia or Pinotage in South Africa – they see it as their national grape. This affinity with tannat has now crept over the border into Argentina where Malbec normally holds sway. Traditionally known as a big heavy tannic and quite astringent wine, however the South American rendition of this famously dark, tannic wine is markedly softer and fruitier nose. Don David is a label produced by Bodega El Esteco, this wine pays homage to the winery’s founder, Don David Michel, whose name it takes, and was apparently inspired by his distinction and elegance. After 12 months in oak the wine is rich on the nose and intensely flavoured with raspberry, caramel and layers of red and black fruit. The palate follows with delicious flavours of black plum, rhubarb and tobacco mixed with dark chocolate and white pepper.
